BLIND TEST: Nescafé VS Maxwell house

We made a blind test between Nescafe Cappuccino and Maxwell House Cappuccino. It is a pity that we did not find illy’s instant coffee in Carrefour. So the result of this test is part of our research and we would like to make another blind test soon after.

First, let’s do a comparison before the blind test!

The price of Maxwell House is 2.48€ and Nescafe is a little expensive, which is 2.95€. However, the difference is very small that we think most consumers will not consider the price as a big selective factor.

Both of these two packages contain 10 sticks and 12.5g per stick. But the box of Maxwell House is taller than Nescafe’s, which give consumers a first impression that it has a big content.

When we open the box outside and see each stick, we find that Nescafe uses a paper package, which is more environmental-friendly than the universal plastic package of Maxwell House. And there are some descriptions on its front and steps of making Cappuccino on the back. This makes Nescafe user-friendly because consumers usually bring sticks rather than boxes.

Then we were going to do the blind test! We put same water of same temperature in each cup.

We had four girls and two boys joining in this test. The result is that:

  1. Four girls all like Maxwell House. Two of them say that they like its sweet taste. One girl compares two coffees and prefers Nescafe for no reason. And the last girl says she likes its heavy flavor. (P.S With the same water, Maxwell House is heavier than Nescafe.)

  2. Two boys both like Nescafe. They give more specific reasons. One boy thinks Nescafe is too sweet, and the other boy says that Nescafe has more flavor of Cappuccino.

As a result, we make several conclusions. We find that Nescafe focus on consumers who are in favor of light taste and used to bring sticks in their bags. Maxwell House focus on consumers who prefer sweet and heavy flavor and has a good package outside which will attract consumers at first sight on shells. However, we do not think today we made a successful blind text. First, we did not find the third brand. Second, the sample is too small that we only had six students doing the test. Next time we would do more preparations and make improvements in these two parts to make a better blind test.
